We want to work for the betterment of our environment yet the work practices usually do not have anything specific about the subject of becoming greener and causing the planet less damage. Negativity aside, it is surprisingly easy to practice reducing your carbon footprint and there are very little things one can do in their daily lives starting from a personal level to make a difference. Positive green practice is not difficult if you look at it that way. Just a few tiny things replaced every day will make noticeable difference on a personal level. You should start the practice by keeping one thing in your mind, it may sometimes feel that you alone can’t make a huge difference but in fact, many people want to reduce their foot print from the planet and tiny steps make huge difference. Sadly not a lot of awareness programs are being organized now in colleges and universities regarding environmental awareness as compared to the awareness of justice. This subject is equally important and it is about time important measures are taken. Meanwhile, we have to concentrate on what we can do as individuals and find more individuals who can help spread awareness and make difference on their personal level too.
Avoid Paper Wastage:
As simple as it may sound, this is something children are taught and are explained how trees are cut to make papers and how we waste them. Some lessons are learned best from our primary school books as they solve the problems using the simplest of logics and words. A very important thing to monitor and avoid is paper wastage. See how much paper you use and how the use can be reduced. If you are a teacher who needs to distribute handouts, encourage online distribution instead of using papers. Similarly, do for double sided prints and discourage the use of single side prints. In the staff rooms or offices, there are stacks of misprinted papers that are destroyed unnecessarily. Unless those papers are nothing confidential, they can be utilized by cutting down and stapling to substitute a notepad. Using recyclable paper is yet another great option.
Being a green is not only slightly easy than we assume, it is luckily very budget friendly as well. Consider walking or cycling instead of going by car. Keep your car maintained and the oil and tire inflation checked to improve mileage. You don’t want to be stuck in traffic and be a cause of pollution and gas wastage. Moreover, you can improvise and set your tasks on two days in a week instead of going too far off distances just to get one little thing done or met someone. Squeeze the work in two to three days and spend less time, energy and gas on travelling by optimizing a little here and there.
We all know the variety of things that can be recycled. We must try to focus on buying only the kind of packaging that promotes recycling and can be recycled. It is usually at the back of the packs of everything. The material that is not easily recycled, the packaging and the grocery bags that are made of material that can’t be recycled is causing a lot of harm to the environment. There are recyclable plates and cups, papers and grocery bags that solve the problem by half and they do not harm our environment. This kind of packaging and material should be promoted and bought. The material that harms our environment and climate should be discouraged and taught others to do so too.
Switch off Lights and Electric Switches:
It is the easiest of all things to keep an eye on the electric switches and devices on stand-by. If you are working in an office or teaching, make sure that you turn off the lights before you exit any place. It is not that you are paying the bills; the unnecessary lights burning will also make difference. There is only very little effort in making this a practice. It is sad to see so many lights are left switched on in empty classrooms where students should be taught this discipline and should be forced to follow it.
Eating the Green:
As teachers, we may already be doing few things right here by carrying our own reusable coffee mugs and plates. We must keep on checking them and we should also eat greener and fresher vegetable and fruits that what is readily available without any effort. Some of us might have the habit of bringing one’s own lunch and that is considered better than buying stuff over the counter or ordering online. Still, we must focus on eating healthier food and including more veggies and fruits in lunch.
Travelling for Work:
The conferences that can be held online and the stuff that can be discussed over video conferencing should immediately be made limited to video conferencing. Soon enough people will realize the time so many people collectively waste in order to gather in one place to discuss something that could be discussed on video conference. Imagine the amount of energy save through this step. This should be implemented by work places and if you have the authority you should promote this culture. Ask your colleges coming in from different locations to communicate through video conferencing as much as possible.
Similarly, the conferences that are taking place in different cities three or four times in a year can definitely be replaced with the local conferences where the opportunities of networking are equal and you cut down on excessive travelling three to four times. Travelling and attending conferences is an important part of the PhD process and so are little details such as giving out printed notes to the students as a teacher. Where every single thing can’t be trimmed down, making different where you can will do just fine to remove your carbon foot print by a great measure.
